Tattenhall Through to Cup Semi Finals
Tattenhall weathered a late fight back by the Tigers to book their place in the Duke of Westminster Cup semi finals.
After getting off to another slow start and conceding a goal in the first two minutes Tattenhall were back in front after 10 minutes with goals from John Boughey and Lewis Jones. Stuart Saddler added another but Blacon struck back to leave the half time score at 3 – 2 to Tattenhall, with Tattenhall having missed a penalty late on in the half following a foul on Lewis Jones. In the second half Stuart Saddler extended the lead to 4-2 but Blacon pulled one back. Goals from John Boughey and Lewis Reeves extended the lead to 6-3 , then Tattenhall handled in the area and Blacon converted the penalty. This spurred a Blacon fight back to pull the score back to 6-5 in front of an excited home crowd. However, Tattenhall regrouped and made sure of the win when Stuart Saddler grabbed his hat trick goal two minutes from time following good approach work by Lewis Jones.
There were strong performances from the Tattenhall midfield and attack with the Saddler hat-trick, competitive tackling from Lewis Reeves and good distribution from Finlay Pilkington who assisted in three of Tattenhall’s goals. Lewis Jones had another good game, chipping in with a goal and assisting on two others with some unselfish passing. James Hellmers played his best 60 minutes yet in a Tattenhall shirt with some great tackling and improved passing. Sam Green and Dominic Matthews both came off the bench to make good contributions in midfield and defence.

Tattenhall JFC U11’s 4 Pulford 4
Honours Even in Another Roller Coaster Game
This week it was Tattenhall’s turn to grab a well-deserved late equalizer in another thrilling match at the Flacca.
Pulford won the last encounter between these teams 5-0 and came to the Flacca having had a series of good results against the league’s higher placed teams. However Tattenhall rediscovered some of the application and concentration that had deserted them since the New Year and went ahead after 5 minutes when the in-form Lewis Jones finished clinically after a fine through ball from John Boughey. Pulford equalized soon after from a good passing move and took the lead a few moments later when their lightening fast centre forward outpaced the Tattenhall defence. Lewis Jones equalized for Tattenhall with a perfect in swinging corner but Pulford went into the break 3-2 ahead when Tattenhall allowed them to poach a goal late-on from a poorly defended corner.
A slick piece of teamwork early in the second half brought Pulford a fourth but the whole Tattenhall team continued to work hard and after 45 minutes Lewis Jones put away a Stuart Sadler through ball for his hat trick. With five minutes left Lewis Reeves rifled home Jones’s perfectly placed near-post corner for the Tattenhall equalizer. Even then in this pulsating game there was still time for Tattenhall keeper Matthew Jones to deny Pulford a last minute winner with a flying fingertip save.
Tattenhall showed their best work rate so far in 2005 which is encouraging in the run-up to next week's cup match. Another good display of finishing from Lewis Jones was well backed up by the whole team, with especially strong performances from Lewis Reeves, John Boughey, Matthew Jones and Kevin Tanswell, who did a good man-to-man marking job on Pulford’s pacy striker in the second half. There were gutsy performances also from Sam Green, James Hellmers , Dominic Matthews and new signing Jamie Cattell, who all came off the bench and ‘got stuck in’.

Tattenhall JFC U11’s 6 Newton Athletic 6
Too Entertaining!
A draw was the right result in a highly entertaining game in which Tattenhall recovered from 4-1 down to lead 6-4, then took their foot off the gas to allow a plucky Newton side to equalize at the death.
The first half saw Newton passing the ball better than Tattenhall and they went into a deserved lead on 10 minutes. Lewis Jones equalized straight from the restart with a fine solo run, beating 5 players and the keeper. The rest of the half was end-to-end stuff and Newton went into a 4-1 lead with some excellent finishing whilst Tattenhall missed several clear chances. Stuart Sadler pulled one back for Tattenhall after a fine through ball from Finlay Pilkington and they got right back into it on the stroke of half time when a spell of pressure led to an own goal as the Newton defence desperately tried to clear a Lewis Jones cross.
After a couple of scares early on in the second half Lewis Jones finished off a good passing move to bring it back to 4-4. This led to a 10 minute ‘purple patch’ for Tattenhall where they dominated and scored two more goals from Lewis Jones and Lewis Reeves. At this stage Tattenhall thought they had it won but Newton had other ideas and were able to step up the pace to score twice in the last five minutes as Tattenhall wilted.
An entertaining game which left Tattenhall ruing their missed chances and late lapse in concentration.

Tattenhall JFC U11’s 2 Malpas & District JFC 5
Gone in 15 Minutes!
Illness, injuries and other commitments meant that Tattenhall could only muster 11 fit players for this local derby game and they struggled to find any organization in the first half following changes due to the injury situation which led to players playing in unfamiliar positions. Their chances of taking anything from the match disappeared in the first 15 minutes as a much improved Malpas side raced into a 4-0 lead. The game became more even as the half progressed and Tattenhall began to develop some coordination but Malpas went 5-0 up after 25 minutes with a well struck 25 yarder that gave Matthew Jones no chance. Lewis Jones pulled one back for Tattenhall with a fine solo run and shot on the stroke of half time.
Tattenhall put in a much more committed and organized performance in the second half . With Kevin Tanswell, John Boughey and Lewis Jones making telling overlaps on the wing, they had the lion’s share of the half’s chances. Dominic Matthews, Sam Green, Lewis Reeves and Stuart Sadler all went close and Lewis Jones rattled the crossbar. Stuart Sadler netted a late consolation after Lewis Jones’ perseverance forced a defensive error.
The boys showed great character to up their game in the second half and with a bit more luck and slightly sharper finishing the score could have been closer. However Malpas are developing into a strong side and were worthy winners in this encounter.

Tattenhall Profit from Colts New Year Hangover
Tattenhall coasted to victory against an injury hit Colts side. They dominated the game from the start but struggled to score early on with too many players shooting for glory instead of passing. The team settled down after 10 minutes when John Boughey converted after good approach play and a fine pass from Sam Green. Further goals from Stuart Sadler, John Boughey and Will Mapstone left the score at 4:0 at half time. Tattenhall ran riot in the second half as they got their passing game together and Colts wilted, with goals from Sam Green Lewis Reeves, George Payne-Gill, Lewis Jones, Kevin Tanswell (2) and John Boughey completing his hat-trick.
A difficult game to judge the form of the Tattenhall players but John Boughey impressed with his ball skills, good passing and a hat-trick. Sam Green passed and ran well. There were disciplined positional performances also by Robbie Kerr, Will Mapstone, James Hellmers and Finlay Pilkington and Dominic Matthews and Dominic Sirignano competed well. Matthew Jones had a quiet day in the Tattenhall goal but handled the one Nomads break he was faced with well, making a brave diving save at the feet of the oncoming forward.
A morale boosting start to the New Year but next week’s 'local derby' against a rapidly improving Malpas & District side will be more of a test.

Tattenhall Run Out of Steam
Tattenhall attempted to repeat their heroics of the previous week against third placed JFC Boughton. For the first three quarters of the match this produced a highly entertaining game with chances being created at both ends. Boughton managed to break down Tattenhall’s defence with about 10 minutes left and this gave them the impetus they needed to up their game and score two more in the closing five minutes against a tiring Tattenhall team.
Everyone in the Tattenhall team worked hard and if they had managed to find the net during a purple patch midway through the first half it might have been a different story.

Tattenhall JFC U11’s 0 AFC Waverton 0
Tattenhall Ride out the Storm
With mid-table Tattenhall short of two regular defenders and down to one substitute and Waverton challenging hard in second position in the league it looked on paper like Waverton just had to turn up to collect the points. However Tattenhall had other ideas and a highly committed team performance gave them a well-deserved share of the spoils.
Waverton were the more skillful side and as expected the play moved into the Tattenhall half from the off. In a nightmare start Tattenhall conceded a penalty in the third minute but Matthew Jones made a great save and the team gained confidence. As the half progressed the make shift centre back combination of Stuart Sadler and John Boughey began to gel and although Waverton had the lions share of the play they never looked like carving out a decisive chance.
A managerial address of Churchillian proportions fired the boys up for the second half. Although once again they were under pressure, lone forward Lewis Jones always looked dangerous and kept three Waverton defenders occupied. Both he and Dominic Matthews went close with shots on the break.
The back four of Saddler, Boughey, George Payne-Gill and Kevin Tanswell ran themselves to a standstill in the second half fending off wave after wave of Waverton attacks. Matthew Jones in goal had a faultless game dealing calmly with everything that came his way. James Helmers played a superb holding role just in front of the back four. In midfield Finlay Pilkington put in his best performance of the season, covering every blade of grass, ably supported by Lewis Reeves and Sam Green. Dominic Sirignano made critical tackles in the Tattenhall area in the closing moments. Waverton’s clearest cut chance came with two minutes left on the clock but they fired over the bar from three yards and Tattenhall hung on to earn a well deserved point.
This was a performance of real concentration, commitment and team spirit and showed that a committed and focussed team is hard to break down at any level of football.

Tattenhall JFC U11’s 7 Blacon Youth Tigers 2
Late Surge Tames Tigers
For the second week running Tattenhall got off to a slow start against an enthusiastic Tigers side who gave them a lesson in passing in the first half. Tattenhall ended the half a goal down after their defence had been split by one of several excellent Blacon passing moves. They could have been further behind but for Matthew Jones’ superb save from a close range shot which he somehow managed to parry over the bar. The only signs of life at the other end of the pitch were a couple of strong runs up the wing by Lewis Jones and a header from the hard working Sam Green , which grazed the bar.
Following some half time encouragement (i.e. not quite a ‘hairdryer’) .Tattenhall started the second half with more urgency and were quickly on level terms when Lewis Jones blazed in an unstoppable volley. Blacon refused to give up and stole the lead again with another slick break. Ten minutes into the second half Tattenhall equalized when Stuart Sadler chested the ball over the line after good approach play by John Boughey.
This was the cue for Tattenhall’s team to come together and at last they started to spray passes round the pitch. With 15 minutes left Finlay Pilkington fired Tattenhall ahead from close range after the keeper had failed to hold a vicious shot. With Tigers losing confidence and Tattenhall now passing superbly, they wrapped up the game with two further goals from Sadler (one a fine header), one from John Boughey after a six man passing move and on the stroke of full time an in-swinging corner from Lewis Jones that the keeper could only parry into the net.
In the last 15 minutes Tattenhall showed how explosive they can be when they get their passing game going – however the scoreline belies the fact that Tigers were the better side for the first half.

Tattenhall JFC U11’s 1 Blacon Youth 4
Slow Start Costs Tattenhall Dearly
Tattenhall got off to a slow start against a fit and determined Blacon side. Too often in the first half they were content to come second against a Blacon team who never stopped running and showed more edge in the tackle. Tattenhall came off three nil to the worse at half time with their high spots of the first half being a breakaway by Dominic Matthews, whose shot was well saved by the Blacon keeper, and a header from Lewis Reeves which went narrowly over the bar afrom a raking free kick from Lewis Jones.
Tattenhall started the second half with much more determination and made it an entertaining and close fought half. Blacon scored a fourth with a fine twenty yard drive midway through the half and had an opportunity for a fifth from the penalty spot when Matthew Jones was judged to have fouled a Blacon forward when diving at his feet . Jones produced a fine save from the penalty and this spurred Tattenhall to greater effort which was rewarded when Stuart Sadler bundled home Tattenhall’s consolation in a goal line skirmish following a corner.
This match was a good learning experience against a team who had a similar skill level but greater competitiveness in the early stages. Tattenhall showed excellent spirit to rise the challenge and up their game in the second half.
Sunday 14th November 2004 - Chester & District Junior League
Chester Nomads 7 Tattenhall JFC U11’s 1
Nomads Avenge Cup Defeat
Tattenhall were under pressure from the start but held Nomads at bay with some good last ditch defending and goalkeeping. Nomads went ahead half way through the first half after a slick passing move which finally split the Tattenhall defence. Tattenhall were unlucky to go 2 down when a through ball found a Nomads forward in a position which had more than a hint of offside about it and he easily beat the Tattenhall keeper Matthew Jones. Nomads continued to play the better football and Tattenhall had a let-off when Nomads managed so shoot over the bar from 3 feet after Mathew Jones had excellently parried a pile driver of a volley.
Tattenhall worked hard on the counter attack and got back into the game just before half time when Lewis Jones slotted home in the bottom right hand corner to make it 2-1 after a slick pass from Stuart Saddler.
Nomads went further ahead early on in the second half when another good passing move split the Tattenhall defence. From then on it was one-way traffic as Nomads upped their game to produce an exhibition of passing that overwhelmed the hard working Tattenhall defence.
In spite of the score some encouraging aspects of the day were another good goalkeeping performance from Matthew Jones and the continuing improvement of Will Mapstone and Sam Green.

Tattenhall U11’s 9 Chester Nomads Colts 0
Colts Defeated but not Dishonoured as Tattenhall Cruise To Victory
Tattenhall carried the momentum from last weeks victory against Nomads into this match against the Colts, who are effectively Nomads' second team. The Colts started well having the majority of the play for the first 10 minutes but then conceded a penalty when Sam Green was brought down following a powerful dribble into the area. Stuart Saddler converted and after this Tattenhall gained dominance with further goals coming before half time from Saddler, Lewis Jones, Lewis Reeves and Finlay Pilkington.
In the second half Tattenhall got their passing game going and Colts ran into problems clearing their lines. Lewis Jones and Stuart Saddler completed their hat-tricks, with several of the goals being poached from poor clearances, and Sam Green fired in the 9th through a crowded area. Dominic Matthews grazed a post after a good move and James Hellmers nearly got his first ever goal for Tattenhall with a 20 yard power drive which went just over the bar. There were good supporting perfromances from Will Mapstone, Robbie Kerr, George Payne-Gill, Dominic Sirignano and John Boughey - who demonstrated some excellent passing and movement. Matthew Jones had a quiet day in the Tattenhall goal to register his first clean sheet of the season.
This was a good confidence booster for Tattenhall as they extended their winning run to four matches. They will need to stay focussed to continue this form next week against Nomads' first team, who will be looking for revenge for their recent Duke of Westminster Cup defeat.
A word about Colts, who emerged from this game with considerable honour, they never gave up and chased everything for the full 60 minutes.
Sunday 31st October 2004 - Duke of Westminster Cup Round 1
Chester Nomads 2 Tattenhall U11’s 4
Tattenhall and Nomads Serve up a Halloween Treat
Tattenhall worked some Halloween magic in the second half to progress to the second round of the Duke of Westminster Cup.
After a tight first 15 minutes Tattenhall grabbed the lead when Stuart Saddler accelerated onto a defence splitting pass from Lewis Reeves and slotted the ball past the keeper. Nomads returned the compliment ten minutes later when their nippy forward line outpaced the Tattenhall defence following a through ball.
Kicking uphill in the second half, Tattenhall went 2-1 down when Nomads capped a good passing move with a well placed finish into the bottom left hand corner. Finlay Pilkington levelled for Tattenhall when he clipped a Stuart Saddler cross into the top right hand corner. Nomads continued to press but Tattenhall always looked dangerous on the break with Saddler and Sam Green grazing both posts in successive minutes before Saddler put Tattenhall ahead. The last 10 minutes was heart in mouth stuff as Nomads threw the kitchen sink at a tiring Tattenhall team but Kevin Tanswell, Robbie Kerr, James Helmers and Will Mapstone produced the most disciplined back four performance of the season to keep Nomads at bay. Even when the Nomads attack broke through they were brilliantly thwarted by keeper Matthew Jones. Lewis Reeves drove the final nail into Nomads Halloween coffin with the last kick of the game when he rifled in a volley after an inswinging Lewis Jones corner had rebounded off a post.
With both sides having no substitutes every one of the 22 players on the pitch gave 110% in a sporting and entertaining game which could have gone either way.
Sunday 10th October 2004 - Chester Junior League
Tattenhall U11’s 5 Westminster Park 2
Tattenhall Ride the Roller Coaster
The first half was an end to end affair which Tattenhall edged thanks to two goals from Stuart Saddler, the first knocked in from close range in a goalmouth scramble, the second a well executed chip over the goalkeeper after he had been but through by Lewis Reeves. Matthew Jones in the Tattenhall goal made several excellent saves on the ground to foil Westminster Park attacks.
Tattenhall sleepwalked their way into the second half, allowing a fired up Westminster park to poach two goals in the first two minutes to bring it level. There then followed another prolonged spell of highly entertaining end-to-end football with both sides having opportunities to take the lead and both being foiled by excellent last-ditch goalkeeping and tackling (Another disciplined performance from Robbie Kerr in defence.)
The match turned Tattenhall’s way mid way through the second half when George Payne-Gill fired into the bottom corner from 15 yards. This settled Tattenhall down and they finished the match with their best 15 minutes of passing football so far this season. The fourth goal came when the Westminster Park goalkeeper was deceived by the bounce of a Lewis Reeves shot. Saddler claimed his hat-trick and Tattenhall’s fifth from the penalty spot with the last kick of the game after he had been brought down in the area.
A good team performance with everyone working their socks off in the most entertaining game of the season so far.
Sunday 3rd October 2004 - Chester Junior League
Tattenhall U11’s 7 Newton Athletic 2
Back in The Groove!
Tattenhall had worked hard on their distribution from the back in training and looked far more assured this week, with the back four generally on top of things against a side who were admittedly not quite as sharp as the three previous opponents. Stuart Saddler and Lewis Jones were paired together at the front for the first time this season and both players benefited from the restoration of this partnership, Jones scoring a hat trick including a superb 15-yard direct free kick and Saddler contributing a goal himself and going close on several occasions.
The midfield worked hard with Lewis Reeves in particular a being a key ball winner and playing some excellent passes. John Boughey also had an excellent game, showing good ball skills to contribute two goals.
Good support was also given by all the rest of the team, including in particular Sam Green, who came off the bench at the start of the second half to graze the cross bar with a header and then score Tattenhall’s seventh goal with a well struck volley which the Newton defence were powerless to stop.
This was a confidence-boosting win for Tattenhall against a Newton side that worked hard for the whole game but never quite matched them. Tattenhall need to take the momentum from this came into next week's home clash with Westminster Park, who will be a tougher proposition.
Sunday 26th September 2004 - Chester Junior League
Tattenhall U11’s 2 Upton 8
Tattenhall Press the ‘Self Destruct’ Button on Home Debut
Tattenhall gave as good as they got for the first twenty minutes but self destructed after allowing Upton to intercept and score from three Tattenhall goal kicks in a row. Things got worse just after half time when an innocuous Upton shot took an awkward bounce and squirmed into the net through the hands of Tattenhall’s despairing keeper. This took the wind out of Tattenhall’s sails and a rampant Upton capitalised by scoring two more in spite of several good saves from Tattenhall keeper Matthew Jones. To their credit Tattenhall pulled themselves together and had a ten minute ‘purple patch’ of concerted pressure with Lewis Reeves and Finlay Pilkington bringing fine saves from the Upton keeper and Stuart Saddler shooting narrowly wide from an excellent through ball from Reeves. Tattenhall’s goals were both scored by Saddler, the first a header from a Lewis Jones cross and the second when he beat the keeper having been put through.
The goal of the match fell to Upton, from a well worked free kick which one of their forwards showed great skill to control, turn and strike home from five yards.
This was always going to be a hard match against a competitive and well drilled Upton side who have several flair players , however Tattenhall did themselves no favours with their poor distribution from the back. Four of the eight Upton goals came from intercepted Tattenhall goal kicks. Something for the boys to work on in training!
Sunday 19th September 2004 - Chester Junior League
Pulford 5 Tattenhall U11’s 0
Wind of Change Blows Tattenhall Away
On a blustery day with the wind at their backs Tattenhall had a bright first half. A keen and competitive Pulford side had the lions share of the possession but Tattenhall created several good chances on the break, notably for Stuart Saddler, who shot narrowly wide when put through by Lewis Reeves, and Sam Green, who grazed the bar with a header from a John Boughey cross. However the pacey Pulford forwards were too quick for the Tattenhall defence and Tattenhall went in at half time two goals behind.
Several changes were made to the formation at half time to try to add some pace to the defence but this turned out to be more of a hindrance than a benefit and disrupted the side. With the wind in their faces Tattenhall now struggled to clear their lines and Pulford’s third and fourth goals were both poached from poor defensive clearances. The fifth goal was an excellent chip over the Tattenhall keeper Matthew Jones (These are big goals for small boys!). Tattenhall on kept trying to the end and still had time to make a couple of chances of their own but it was not to be their day as both were struck narrowly wide with only the keeper to beat.
Good commitment from the boys but we need to work on our defensive organisation and distribution from the back.
Sunday 12th September 2004 - Chester Junior League
JFC Boughton 7 Tattenhall U11’s 1
Tattenhall Struggle Against A Good Side
A tough afternoon against a strong, well organized and competitive team - Tattenhall spent the first 20 minutes pinned in their own half and were undone twice, once by a defensive mistake resulting from the incessant pressure and once by an inch perfect Beckham-like 25 yard chip from Boughton’s chief playmaker. Tattenhall tried hard and came back well in the later stages of the first half - with Stuart Saddler having a very strong penalty appeal turned down by the referee and Lewis Jones bringing two fine saves from the Boughton keeper.
Early in the second half Boughton went 4:0 up when their attack managed to get behind the Tattenhall defence twice in quick succession. However Tattenhall were still pushing forward themselves with Stuart Saddler and Lewis Jones both bringing excellent saves from the keeper. Tattenhall got their consolation when Lewis Jones converted a penalty after Kevin Tanswell had been brought down following a mazy dribble into the Broughton area. This sparked Tattenhall’s strongest period of play with in particular Lewis Reeves working very hard in midfield.
Unfortunately Broughton managed to score three more as Tattenhall faded late on in the game. Though the scoreline was kept to manageable proportions by Tattenhall keeper Matthew Jones who managed to get the better of several ‘one- on-ones’ with Boughton attackers on occasions when the defence went missing.
This was a good learning experience for the boys against a side who will undoubtedly be one of the stronger teams in the league.
Thursday 9th September 2004 - Chester Junior League
Malpas & District 3 Tattenhall U11’s 7
League Season Starts With A Win
A comfortable victory for Tattenhall in the first league game of the season against a scratch team who had never played together before. Tattenhall dominated the first half with their superior organization and cantered to a 4 : 0 lead by half time with goals from Lewis Jones, Lewis Reeves , Stuart Sadler and Oliver Loveday.
In the second half the Tattenhall rapidly went to 6:0 with further goals from Stuart Sadler and John Boughey. Tattenhall then began to experiment with players in different positions and a rapidly improving Malpas team took advantage of changes in Tattenhall’s defensive organization to score three late goals. Tattenhall however had the last laugh when Sam Green scored the best-worked goal of the game with a fine finish from close range following some excellent approach work and a perfect cross by John Boughey.
An encouraging start by Tattenhall. Although Malpas were an inexperienced team they never gave up. Malpas have some good players and will clearly be a tougher proposition later on in the season when they have a few more games under their belt.
Sunday 5th September 2004 - Pre-season friendly
Upton 6 Tattenhall U11’s 3
Tattenhall Take Encouragement From Defeat
Tattenhall started the game still rusty from the holiday break and Upton were able to exploit this and take a two-goal lead. However as the half wore on Tattenhall found their feet and began to get the hang of the 11-a-side game with Stuart Sadler shooting wide when put through by Kevin Tanswell and again, on the stoke of half time heading narrowly over the bar from a Lewis Reeves corner.
Tattenhall were level soon after half time with two almost identical clinical finishes from Lewis Jones, following good approach play by the Tattenhall midfield. However the heat began to take its toll and Upton, who fielded 5 substitutes to Tattenhall’s one, finished strongest, going 4 –2 up before Finlay Pilkington was able to poach Tattenhall’s third following some loose passing in the Upton defence. Two further goals followed late on to make the final score 3-6.
In spite of the defeat, the Tattenhall management was encouraged by a spirited performance against a team who used more substitutes on an energy-sapping afternoon. The team ran themselves to a standstill, never gave up and demonstrated excellent spirit to fight back having been on the ropes in the first 20 minutes.
